The freedom of exploring outside and the shade of the trees on hot days are core memories from my childhood. The dogwood trees would burst with blooms in spring then shift to showcase their shiny leaves as summer came closer. I was a bit of a loner as a kid, mostly because there often weren’t other kids to play with besides my brother. One summer I was sent to my grandparents by myself and I would spend hours with the lone willow tree. It was also abandoned and yet it was firmly rooted, strong and defiant, shady and full of life.
