Peacock #01, 20 x 16, original painting in oils on canvas

$800

My first role in a play was as a peacock. My mom made a beautiful costume for me of a long train of layered lace of satin with a waist tie. I was a freshman in high school and very self conscious about my body.

Description

Peacocks have always symbolized extravagance and vanity but also confidence. They are loud and showy and don’t care who sees or hears them. There is a bossiness and pushiness about them that is appealing. They own what they are. This piece was created as a study of warm and cool colors and a challenge to myself to push beyond my comfort zone and try a more classic painting process. I started with a subtraction layer of dark brown, pulling out tones with brushes and tools by removing paint. Then I added a layer of transparent blues and greens to the background. Finally I added opaque layers to detail the feathers and body and closer trees.

Size: 20 x 16 inches
